This summer some of our Professional Interns were interviewed to discuss their experience working as part of the Birchwood Team.
Daniyal Syed, Professional Intern- Birchwood Chevrolet Buick GMC
Eric Wankling, Professional Intern- Birchwood Chevrolet Buick GMC
Rejean Courcelles, Professional Intern- Birchwood Chevrolet Buick GMC
Q: Why did you decide to work at Birchwood?
Daniyal: “I’m a student at Asper and I have joined the Co-op Program. When entered into the program I started listing the companies with top reviews by alumni and past students. Birchwood Automotive Group was among one of the top companies rated by students.”
Q: How does the nature of your job at Birchwood relate to you degree and/ or career choice?
Rejean: “I’m looking to have a managerial position with the company in the future, and I’m currently working mostly in the marketing department with Birchwood Chevrolet. This is giving me great experience, and will help me make better business decisions in my future endeavours.”
Q: What have you found valuable from your time here?
Eric: “The most valuable thing I have drawn from my time here is being treated like every other employee. I wasn’t treated differently because I was a student and I was held to the same level of accountability as everyone else working around me. I think this is valuable because I have a better understanding of what it takes to work a corporate job and have learned the skills required to be a valuable member of any team.”
Q: What did you/ have you enjoyed the most from being at Birchwood?
Rejean: “I’ve enjoyed working on numerous projects while being at the Birchwood Chevrolet dealership. Having worked in numerous departments in the dealership, I’ve gained a tremendous amount of knowledge on the day to day activities needed to run a successful dealership.”
Q: Share something about yourself as a student, and more importantly, as an individual that we should know about you
Daniyal: “I am starting my 3rd year at Asper and this was my first Co-op term. I came to Canada 2 years back to complete my under-graduation studies. With little experience in sales, I started working at MTS, as soon as I got to Canada, as a sales associate in a door to door team. I learnt a lot out of that experience. I learnt the Canadian culture, learnt about people, the multiple societies and segments of people living here. Coming from hot climate with a maximum temperature going to 50 degrees Celsius to working door to door in -30 degrees Celsius was life changing moment for me.”
Q: Are there any funny stories from your time at Birchwood?
Eric: “Working beside Daniyal everyday created too many funny stories to list. I think my favourite was when we all went golfing at the intern golf tournament. Watching Daniyal try to learn the game all day, and nearly hitting Craig with a golf ball was funny.”
