Each week we sit down with one of our talented Co-op Students from a variety of majors and discuss their experience working as part of the Birchwood Team.
Victoria van Ginkel, Marketing Coordinator
Q: Why did you decide to work at Birchwood?
A: “I have a friend who worked for the company, she shared all positive remarks about the company and her experience. This motivated me to apply for the position when I saw it on the Career Portal. After my two interviews with HR and the BMW dealership GM and GSM, I had a great impression of the company and what the available position could offer me.”
Q: How does the nature of your job at Birchwood relate to your degree and/or career of choice?
A: “I’m majoring in marketing and human resource management at the Asper School of Business. My position with Birchwood BMW as a Marketing Coordinator gives me work experience in the field that I would like to work in after I graduate. With the variety of projects I’ve been assigned, it’s given me an idea of what work is involved with different tasks. This has helped me narrow down which areas of marketing I would like to focus on in the future.”
Q: What have you found valuable from your time here?
A: “Throughout my time here, I’ve been assigned various projects which have given me the opportunity to perform and be exposed to different tasks I have not completed before. I’ve found my time here to be valuable because I’m learning with every project. It’s also rewarding to see a project through from start to finish, which is what I’ve been able to do throughout my time here at Birchwood BMW.”
Q: What did you/have you enjoyed the most from being at Birchwood?
A: “I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere here with the company, it’s a great environment to work in. Regardless of whether you are in one of the dealerships or at head office, the people here are extremely friendly and welcoming. It makes it enjoyable to come to work.”
Q: Share something about yourself as a student, and more importantly, as an individual that we should know about you.
A: “I’m in my final year at Asper, majoring in marketing and human resource management. I completed my co-op work terms in accounting and human resource management positions with other companies. After my work terms I felt I didn’t fit within those areas of work and wanted to find a marketing position. I was fortunate enough to obtain the position I’m in now with Birchwood BMW. After working here for four months I feel reassured that marketing is the area I want to work in after I graduate. The work experience and opportunities I’ve had with the company have been extremely valuable with guiding me in a direction for my future.”
Q: Are there any funny stories from your time at Birchwood?
A: “Our Drive for Team Canada event was one of the first events I was assigned right after I began my position with Birchwood BMW. During the event I remember turning around to see someone running around in a blow-up t-rex dinosaur costume, like the one pictured below. I was confused at first and thought maybe it was a customer in the dinosaur getup. Once I got close I realized it was one of our Financial Managers, he had put on the costume for the event. This was my first dose of the dealership’s fun atmosphere that I would be accustomed to throughout my time here. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy working with the team, everyone still has fun while working hard to deliver their exceptional customer service and work output.”
